Executive Director of the Core Curriculum

Location: Abu Dhabi
Open Date: Apr 17, 2025
Deadline:

Description
NYU Abu Dhabi's Core Curriculum forms the intellectual heart of our mission to provide an international student body with an outstanding, expansive, global liberal arts education. Each year the Core Curriculum typically offers 160 courses during the fall and spring semesters and 80 courses during J-Term (the latter in collaboration with Global Education). The First-Year Writing Seminars (FYWS) are considered part of the Core Curriculum, but are managed separately by the Writing Program. Each year about 35 FYWS are offered. The Executive Director of the Core Curriculum oversees all aspects of the Core, ensuring that it continues to be a rich and transformative experience which inspires curiosity in students and creativity and interdisciplinarity among faculty.

The ED is supported directly by the Associate Director of the Core Curriculum (a new position) and the Program Manager of the Core/Assistant Director of Administration (Caitlin Newsom). The Program Manager supervises student assistants who provide additional support. The ED is also supported by, and collaborates with, the other Undergraduate Education offices: Student Research, the Center for Writing, the Ballon Center for Teaching and Learning, the Academic Resource Center, the Registrar's Office, Undergraduate Academic Policies, and Student Success.

The ED facilitates faculty collaboration across disciplines; supports faculty in developing new course proposals and revisions to existing courses; presents to prospective and current students on the Core Curriculum's values and requirements; chairs the Core Curriculum Committee; and holds an ex-officio role on the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee; hosts/participates in professional development events throughout the academic year. The ED oversees the NYUAD Summer Reads program and related Marhaba First-Year Colloquia, designating a faculty representative to the NYU Reads Committee. This position may entail international travel to align the NYUAD Core with other core curriculum programs at NYU New York and the NYU Global Academic Centers.

Recent initiatives that have been led by the current ED (and which may be continued), include: alignment with other core curricula at NYU New York and NYU's Global Academic Centers; the Interdisciplinary Core Curriculum Grant; hosting Core-related performances in collaboration with the Arts Center; and highlighting a particular Core theme each academic year.

While the ED oversees these initiatives and processes at a high level, the Program Manager is responsible for driving all aspects of the day-to-day administration and operations. The PM ensures effective management of curricular planning, administers the activities of Core Curriculum Committee, monitors the budget, and coordinates faculty events and communications. The PM also supports the production of the Core Curriculum User Guide, annual planning reports, summer colloquium and faculty orientation. The ED drafts email communications and supervises the PM in ensuring that the Core Guide and web sites are current; and oversees the budget.

Some responsibilities will be delegated to the Associate Director of the Core Curriculum, a newly created position. This may include responsibilities with the Core Curriculum Committee, collaborating with the Global Education on J-term Field Colloquia, and splitting responsibilities for grade appeals, internal and external events, communications, and budget.

The start date of this appointment is September 1, 2025.
