Overview
The Health Information Management (HIM) Instructor teaches credit courses within the HIM Associate Applied Science (AAS) Degree Program. The HIM Instructor will develop curriculum and teach courses in the Learning Management System, Blackboard Ultra. Curriculum and course(s) will be delivered using a Competency-Based Education (CBE) format which is aligned with the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) program standards.
Additional responsibilities include serving as the HIM Program Director as outlined in the accreditation standards of the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
Faculty positions benefit from BTC's Open Campus Flexible Work Environment. Based on the instructor schedule, faculty are required to be on campus for instruction, office hours, meetings, and other campus activities, while certain job duties may be completed remotely.

Responsibilities
Instructor Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and deliver instruction and facilitate the learning of students within assigned courses.
- Collaborate in the administrative activities of the HIM AAS program, including planning, development, scheduling, and budgeting as a professional team member.
- Engage in ongoing student learning assessment to determine effectiveness of instruction and curriculum.
- Cultivate a classroom environment in which all students feel welcomed, valued and included leading to student success.
- Maintain accurate student records and reports as requested by administrative offices.
- Support students as a mentor, while referring to college support areas to ensure student success.
- Remain current on best practices in the teaching field so that instruction is delivered in a variety of methods, use the latest supportive technology, and utilize alternative delivery methods.
- Remain current on curriculum content with use of continuous quality improvement techniques to update content and foster current evidence-based program assessment and improvement.
- Prepare and update course syllabi (using BTC guidelines) for each course taught.
- Participate in professional development activities and serve on college improvement teams and college wide committees as appropriate.
- Attend advisory and departmental meetings.
- Assist in the enforcement of college regulations and report student conduct violations to administration.
- Meet weekly office hours and other duties required to meet student, employer, and college needs.
- Meet Wisconsin Technical College System professional development requirements through the Faculty Quality Assurance System.
Program Director Responsibilities
- Responsible for the organization, administration, instruction, evaluation, continuous quality improvement, curriculum planning and development, directing other program faculty/staff, and general effectiveness of the program.
- Participate in the budget preparation process.
- Responsible for applying for initial accreditation of the HIM program by the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), adherence to CAHIIM accreditation standards, maintaining annual reports, preparation for self-studies and accreditation site visit requirements.
Qualifications
Instructor Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management (HIM) from a CAHIIM accredited program
OR
Associate's degree in Health Information Management (HIM) from a CAHIIM accredited program and a Bachelor's degree in a Healthcare or related field. - Minimum of 2 years, 4,000 hours of related HIM occupational experience of which at least one year (2,000 hours) shall be within 5 years of the date of appointment.
- Current credential with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) in the primary areas of instruction. AHIMA preferred credentials include RHIA or RHIT, but accepted AHIMA credentials include CCS, CCS-P, CDIP, CHDA, or CHPS.
Program Director Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management (HIM) from a CAHIIM accredited program
OR
Associate's degree in Health Information Management (HIM) from a CAHIIM accredited program and a Bachelor's degree in a Healthcare or related field. - Minimum of 2 years, 4,000 hours of related HIM occupational experience of which at least one year (2,000 hours) shall be within 5 years of the date of appointment.
- Current certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
