Job Summary
The Industrial Hygiene manager at Georgia Southern oversees the development, implementation, and administration of the university's Laboratory Safety, Biosafety, and other lab-related safety and health programs. The Manager ensures compliance with federal laws, sponsor requirements, and university policies regarding safe laboratory best practices including chemical, biological, and radiological concerns.
This position will serve as the required Chemical Hygiene Officer and is responsible for establishing policy and procedure, overseeing inspection, accident/exposure investigations, federal reporting, and laboratory training. The CHO advises the Vice President for Research, the Provost, and the President on matters concerning research laboratory safety and health. This position supervises the Industrial Hygiene Lab Specialist.
Responsibilities
- Works in a collaborative team to implement lab safety and compliance programs to safeguard employees and ensure legal compliance
- Coordinates with EHS to maintain databases for biological, chemical, radiological and laser safety items, shared resources and required reporting
- Serves as the principal point of contact for related external inspectors and regulators and Other duties as assigned
- Initiates and manages departmental laboratory safety assigned contacts
- Manages relevant safety committee duties and activities (E.g.,Lab Safety Committee, Institutional Biosafety Committee, Radiation Safety Committee)
- Coordinates and directs lab inspections, accident investigations, hazard assessments, chemical hygiene monitoring, generates reports and ensures resultant violations are addressed by the department and laboratory with appropriate timeframes
- Oversees the Chemical Hygiene, Biological Safety and Radiation Safety programs to assure regulatory compliance and promote best practice
- Serves as principal source of expertise to the University regarding appropriate equipment, facilities, and work practices for protecting laboratories, staff, and the environment from contamination and infectious organisms
- Builds out the University policies and procedures; create training materials and web-based resources reflective of the University's research laboratory based teaching and research programs
- Develops and conducts training (conventional and online) for employees and students on related topics
- Serves as the lead University resource for monitoring and communicating new regulatory developments in laboratory safety best practice, and ensuring that the university is updating policies, procedures, and training as needed and provides informed guidance to Georgia Southern's leadership and other lead stakeholders concerning the impact of laboratory operations and needs on the University's future growth initiatives, with the ability to participate in and inform cross disciplinary teams and initiatives
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree at an accredited 4-year institution in industrial hygiene, environmental health & safety, health physics, chemistry, biology, or a related field
Required Experience
- Two (2) to Four (4) years of professional experience in a health and safety profession or in a laboratory setting
- Experience with OSHA and EPA regulations and their application in a laboratory setting
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Educational Qualifications
- Advanced degree in a STEM field Certification in a professional Safety and Health area including but not limited to Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or willingness to acquire within one year
Preferred Experience
- Experience in a research laboratory in a university, military or governmental setting
Proposed Salary
$78,706 - $102,285
This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
