Department Profile
The Cerritos College Associate Degree Nursing Program is housed in the Health Occupations Division of Cerritos College, a single college district in the California Community College system. The four semester program offers didactic and clinical coursework which leads to an Associate Degree in Nursing and qualifies the graduate for the California state board licensing exam (NCLEX-RN). The program has full state accreditation through the Board of Registered Nursing and has had for over 60 years. The program also holds full national accreditation with Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The program meets or exceeds program goals/outcomes for completion rates, licensing rates, and employment rates. Through a competitive application process, the program admits 50 students each semester, for a total of 100 students in the program per year.
The Cerritos College program mission and philosophy is to prepare entry-level practicing nurses who can meet the needs of a diverse population in an ever changing health care environment. Nursing is defined as a science, discipline, and health care practice that focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients having health problems within the domain of nursing. The goals of nursing practice focus on health promotion, illness prevention, rehabilitation, and supporting the resources of the person who is ill or threatened with illness in adapting to changes within the environment. The program is designed on a Concept Based Curriculum Model with a lifespan approach. Instruction is centered upon the Nurse of the Future Competencies, QSEN Competencies, National Patient Safety Goals, and NCLEX blueprint. Clinical education is centered upon clinical reasoning and application of nursing process. Course experiences are designed to encourage active discussion, sharing, inquisitiveness, critical thinking, and competencies.
The program is sensitive to the cultural practices and contributions that are unique to the individuals and groups represented on the campus and in the community. Nursing Faculty are committed to quality nursing education that reflects teaching/learning strategies that are innovative, evidence based, and centered on best practices. A successful candidate will be value teaching practices that consider the students' experiences, allow for mentoring and remediation, and provide a holistic student support system.
Job Duties
ALL FACULTY SHALL:
ALL FACULTY WHO ARE ASSIGNED CLASSES SHALL:
1. Tests and exams must be available to the student without charge.
2. The text and course pack must be available to students with disabilities.
3. The publisher must grant read-only access to designated college staff for purposes of evaluation of course materials.
4. The text must be downloadable or printable.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in nursing and a minimum of two years of registered nursing experience in either direct patient care and/or registered nursing level teaching. Registered nurse patient care and teaching experience must have been within the past five years. Active California Registered Nursing License.
Understanding of and sensitivity to meeting the needs of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of the student, community, and employee population.
Additional Requirements
- Direct patient care experience within the past five years in the nursing area to which he or she will be assigned. Direct care experience can be met by:
- Two years of continuous, full-time direct patient care experience as a Registered Nurse in Medical Surgical, Psychiatric, Obstetrics, Pediatric, or Community Based Nursing; OR
- One year full-time clinical teaching experience at the registered nursing level in the designated area that demonstrates clinical currency and competency.
- Nursing and teaching experience must be in the past five years.
- Active and current California Registered Nurse License with no disciplinary actions.
- Current American Heart Association CPR certification.
- Current physical examination with health updates to include: (+) titers to MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella; current TDap; current negative TB test (or CXR); current flu vaccination (or reason for declination); COVID vaccine/booster series.
- Demonstrate visual acuity sufficient for observation and assessment of patients and their environment in the provision of nursing care.
- Demonstrate hearing acuity sufficient to assess patient needs, perform physical assessment, and hear normal conversation as it relates to their working environment.
- Demonstrate tactile ability and dexterity sufficient for the use of small instruments using a light touch for control.
- Demonstrate tactile ability sufficient for patient care, physical assessment, and intervention.
- Demonstrate tactile ability to put on and remove Personal Protective Equipment, or PPE.
- Demonstrate physical abilities and strength sufficient to perform clinical, administrative, and emergency procedures.
- Demonstrate ability to freely walk, stand, sit, squat, balance, climb, reach, grip, lift, pull, and push as needed in the performance of clinical duties.
- Demonstrate agility and dexterity sufficient to meet the needs of the work environment.
- Demonstrate physical ability sufficient to maneuver in small spaces (including standing, walking, bending, and range-of-motion of extremities).
- Demonstrate gross and fine motor abilities sufficient to perform safe and effective patient care, as well as providing safe environments and responding to unexpected situations in a timely manner.
- Demonstrate sufficient physical endurance to attend, participate, and complete assigned responsibilities in the skill lab and/or clinical hospital site.
- Eligible candidates must be able to pass a 12panel urine drug screen.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree emphasis in Nursing Education.
- Doctorate Degree in Nursing.
- Certification in areas of nursing education: CNE, CNEcl, Simulation
- The following will be considered upon breadth and depth:
- Teaching experience at the community college level, pre-licensure
- Registered Nurse level clinical teaching experience
- Clinical experience in specialty areas: Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Mental Health, ICU
- Certification in areas of nursing: Education, Med Surg, ICU, Emergency Room, etc.

Physical Demands
Physical requirements may be met with or without reasonable accommodations. Requires ambulatory ability to move to various office and classroom-type locations and to stand, bend, stoop, and reach to setup equipment and provide instruction. Requires sufficient hand eye coordination and dexterity to write on a board or type on a computer. Requires sufficient visual acuity to read documents and make presentations. Requires sufficient auditory ability to project voice to a group, hear questions and prompts, and carry on routine conversations. Requires the ability to lift, push, and pull objects of medium weight (less than 30 lbs.) on an occasional basis.
Conditions of Employment
Assignments are contingent upon sufficient funding and enrollment.
Assignments may include day, evening, and/or weekend classes.
Individual who is offered employment shall be required to obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State
Department of Justice and remit the required fee for processing the fingerprints, produce an original social security card, and submit negative TB test results (must be within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a school district in California) before employment.
Faculty must be able to teach on-campus or remotely as assigned.
Candidates must be able to provide proof of California residency prior to employment.
Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per Government Codes 3100-3109.
