Position Summary:
This is a tenure track or tenured faculty appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. Rank and tenure are negotiable depending upon the ways in which the candidate meets the universitys and appropriate academic home units criteria for rank and tenure. This is a full-time, fiscal year position. While this role is 100% leadership, the position will hold rank and tenure status within an appropriate academic unit within one of the colleges at the University of Idaho.

Administrative Summary:
The University of Idaho, Idahos land-grant university in the United States, seeks a creative and collaborative leader to serve as the Director of its Center for Excellence Teaching and Learning (CETL). The Director will lead a comprehensive center that offers wide-ranging services, programs, and resources that enhance teaching effectiveness campus- wide to promote student success. The Director oversees five full-time employees: three instructional designers, two media and technology staff, and an administrative assistant.

The Director will join a vital, university-wide unit that was established in 2017 and is poised to continue advancing opportunities that innovate, grow impact, and enhance its offerings. CETL provides integrated support by developing faculty teaching skills and enhancing pedagogy, providing course and curriculum design and learning technology assistance for the full range of undergraduate and graduate courses from asynchronous to face-to-face, and participating in university wide initiatives that promote student success through faculty development and collaboration with the universitys assessment team. CETLs focus is on faculty development, elevating its visibility within the university, and strengthening the integration of teaching and learning efforts in a systematic and cohesive way that leverages program assessment findings and aligns with the universitys mission and dedication to student success.

The Director will have primary responsibilities in these areas:
Refine and implement a focused and compelling vision for integrating faculty teaching development aligned with student success initiatives by collaborating with stakeholders across the university;
  • Serve as a strategic partner to faculty, academic units, and administrative units on teaching and innovation;
  • Collaborate across the University to support the success of U Idahos statewide faculty and student body;
  • Provide oversight and management of the CETL budget and staff;
  • Elevate CETLs visibility and impact.

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Faculty, the Director is responsible for CETLs overall strategic design and implementation of programs aimed at strengthening faculty teaching skills, promoting teacher innovation, increasing faculty engagement with the center, and oversight of course design services. The Director will promote a culture of continuing skills development among faculty, enhance the quality of course design and application of best practices across face-to-face, online, and mixed-modality courses and improve U of Idahos performance in promoting student success. CETL is charged to work with all faculty with instructional responsibilities in all stages of their careers including the graduate level and post-doctoral researchers.

The Director will work alongside faculty, staff, and administrators to help refine and implement CETLs mission, collaborate with campus partners to set the direction for student success through improved faculty practice, and create and maintain an infrastructure that supports and realizes CETLs mission provide to provide faculty, course, and curriculum development support for all faculty, across all instructional modalities: in-class, online, and everything in-between. To support the universitys student success efforts, the Director will partner with academic and other units, including the Career Center, the Center for Disability Access and Resources, the Office of Information Technology and with the vice provosts for digital learning initiatives and academic initiatives. As the university expands its student success initiatives, CETL will develop and lead essential targeted faculty development efforts and related assistance.

CETL has many distinguishing strengths, including a group of skilled and dedicated staff and a vibrant portfolio of programs and services. The overarching aim for the next Director will be to build on these strengths to lead CETL to greater excellence and contribute to broad student success initiatives in which faculty, staff, and administrators work together to increase their impact and reach to transform the educational experience at U Idaho.

Contingency Description:
This administrative appointment or the administrative portion of the faculty appointment is temporary. Employee acknowledges and agrees that in the event there is no longer a need for the administrative assignment, as determined by University in its sole discretion, University may change this Agreement and remove the administrative salary and/or course release during the contract year and employee may return to their faculty appointment, upon 60 days written notice.

Minimum Education/Degree Required:
Listed degree qualification is required at time of application.
Required Qualifications:
  • An earned doctorate or other terminal degree appropriate to the field from a nationally accredited institution or international equivalent
  • Minimum of three years of academic leadership experience in faculty development, teaching in higher education, instructional design or other related field.
  • A scholarly record commensurate with one of an associate professor in an academic unit at U of I.
  • Evidence of successful university teaching and highly developed teaching skills.
  • Eligible for academic appointment in a department at the University of Idaho subject to normal internal vetting processes.

  • Experience with administration of educational software
  • Experience as an Associate or Full professor with tenure.
