POSITION SUMMARY
The News Reporter-Producer-Host will be a voice for a trusted news source in the Monterey Bay Area. Responsibilities include reporting, writing, editing and voicing audio stories for broadcast on 90.3 KAZU, and at times on NPR partners or for NPR, and writing, editing, and producing digital stories for KAZU.org, which will often involve also taking pictures. The role reports to KAZU's News Director.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following:
Reporting:
- Researches story ideas and pitches short-, medium- and long-term stories at weekly news meetings.
- Develops sources by meeting with local leaders, newsmakers and community members, particularly in underserved areas.
- Seeks out unique and overlooked people and topics.
- Fact-checks own work, citing journals, news sources or public records as appropriate.
- Records audio in the field, on the phone and in a studio.
- Writes spots for daily newscasts.
- Rotates regularly through daily newscast producer role.
- Develops original enterprise feature stories.
- Edits scripts with the News Director or other assigned editor.
- Records voice tracks.
- Edits audio using Adobe Audition.
- Mixes and produces stories, including long-form work for broadcast or podcast.
- Produces promos for stories ahead of broadcast.
- Peer edits co-workers' stories.
- Edits student interns' stories.
- Writes companion digital stories for audio pieces following AP Style.
- Builds out digital posts in NPR's Grove Content Management System.
- Produces daily news podcast as part of daily newscast producer rotation.
- Writes standalone digital content for kazu.org, as appropriate.
- Edits digital stories with News Director or other assigned editor.
- Edits co-workers' and interns' digital stories, as needed.
- Takes photos/video for digital stories and writes captions and credits.
- Creates station social media content, including photos/video.
- Participates in student intern training:
- Invites interns to shadow during field reporting.
- Oversees student intern participation in daily newscast production.
- Collaborates with student interns on news stories, social media posts and other projects.
- Attends regular department and all-staff meetings.
- Adds potential and ongoing stories to news production calendar.
- Helps maintain the story tracking database, source database, photo library and other digital assets.
- Helps maintain FCC Issues/Programs report.
- Represents KAZU at conferences, meetings, and collaborations with other media organizations.
- Participates in station public events.
- Trains to host and takes on-air shifts as needed, including possibly on holidays and in breaking news or special coverage situations.
- Participates in on-air fundraising campaigns.
- Covers breaking news events as necessary.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Performs other duties as assigned by News Director or other station leaders.

WORK LOCATION
- This is a field-based position: The reporter will be expected to be in the office for group meetings, on air shifts, meetings with supervisor and/or during special coverage.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to write concise, error-free copy in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with broadcast journalism, specifically using voice and sound to report news stories.
- Superb verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of journalism ethics, reporting standards and the mission of public media and public service journalism.
- Experience with multimedia tools: audio equipment, photo and video cameras, mult boxes, mixers, etc.
- Ability to juggle multiple stories of varying lengths and complexities, from quick-turn breaking news stories to features to long-form series.
- Ability to form and ask probing questions to interviewees.
- Ability to develop and maintain contact with sources and mine online resources and data for information.
- Familiarity with AP style.
- Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite to edit audio, photos and video.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new software and become proficient in digital tools like Air Table, Google Suite, and Grove.
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision, and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Four-year degree from an accredited college or university.
- 2-4 years professional experience in a daily audio news environment.
- Applicants who don't meet the above criteria but have equivalent work experience may substitute evidence of that.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence.
- Knowledge of current Monterey and/or San Benito County and regional issues.
- Experience in a public radio newsroom.
- Spanish fluency.
- Data reporting skills.

The hourly hiring range for this position is $30-$34. Classification: Grade 5, Staff. This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
