Assistant Vice President - Capital Projects

About the Opportunity

Summary & Responsibilities:

Northeastern University's Planning, Real Estate and Facilities (PREF) Division seeks an accomplished leader to serve as Assistant Vice President for Capital Projects (AVP-CP). This is an exciting opportunity to provide leadership and strategic direction for all construction and renovation projects at a dynamic, top tier, urban research university.

The new AVP-CP will join the University as it continues a more-than- decade-long trajectory of unprecedented growth in student enrollment, faculty, staff, and physical space along with tremendous advances in academic and research rankings. It is in this context that the new AVP-CP, reporting to the Associate Vice President for Real Estate & Capital Projects, will lead an in-house team of approximately 35 construction professionals and up to 20 contracted project managers. The AVP-CP will establish project management and construction management protocols, reporting standards for stakeholders at all levels, and oversee project initiation, construction contracts, design services, and client engagement to ensure satisfaction.

The AVP-CP will leverage technical expertise and strategic vision to develop and communicate how cutting-edge design, thoughtful construction, and timely renovations can optimally support the implementation of the University's strategic and master plans. This role requires balancing high-level strategy with effective oversight of construction and renovation projects of all sizes, encompassing diverse and specialized skills, detailed technical specifications, significant financial investments, and long-term impacts on the University. The AVP-CP will be guided by the Division's established principles for customer support, project management, fiscal control, and cost-effective innovation, managing a capital program of approximately $360M annually.

The AVP-CP will evaluate the effectiveness of current practices, processes, and systems, identifying opportunities for improvement and driving the development and implementation of initiatives to standardize professional practices, streamline workflows, and enhance management effectiveness and responsive project delivery. A successful candidate will leverage data and analytics to assess the current project portfolio, forecast future staffing and resource needs, and ensure alignment with fiscal and budgetary priorities. Strong knowledge of construction costs, market conditions, and budget management is essential.

The AVP-CP will also build strong collaborative relationships across the University, advocating for PREF's interests and ensuring alignment with institutional goals. They will actively participate in a wide range of committees and initiatives, often representing PREF in efforts that extend beyond their immediate responsibilities, demonstrating leadership and commitment to the University's mission.

The ideal candidate for the AVP-CP role will bring relevant degrees, certificates, or equivalent experience in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture or Engineering Management and at least 10 years of increasingly responsible experience that includes leading design and construction organizations, preferably within a higher education or similarly complex institutional setting.

Success will require proven leadership skills, a commitment to team building, professional development, and collaboration, along with outstanding communication, strategic thinking, diplomacy, and problem-solving skills to work effectively with all levels of internal and external constituencies. A deep interest in innovation and the potential of current and emerging technologies to enhance project management and execution will be critical. The successful candidate will also bring demonstrated commitment to fostering a culture that is diverse and inclusive, combined with an appreciation for both the service and stewardship roles of university facilities organizations.

Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management or Engineering Management with a minimum of 10 years experience managing design and construction organizations within a higher education institution or equivalent.
  • Registration as a Registered Architect, Professional Engineer, Certified Planner or Certified Construction Manager desired.
  • Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to foster collaboration, inclusivity, and a service-oriented approach to work.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong, diverse teams and meaningful partnerships.
  • Experience in team building, mentoring, and professional development, with a commitment to creating an environment that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • In-depth understanding of the dual roles of service and stewardship within university facilities organizations, and the ability to balance both effectively.
  • Proven sound judgment and leadership in navigating complex, multi-faceted, and rapidly changing problem-solving situations.
  • Knowledge of best practices and continuous improvement processes related to capital construction, facilities management, and project delivery systems.
  • Strong organizational and strategic skills, including the ability to set priorities, create clear direction and expectations, and ensure accountability in a dynamic and demanding environment.
