Job Summary


The University of Colorado, Boulder's Police Department (CUPD) is accepting applications for a Property and Evidence Assistant! The Property and Evidence Assistant supports the daily management, scheduling, oversight, and coordination of all operations within the Property and Evidence Section, including the control and disposition of property. Reporting to the Property and Evidence Supervisor and/or the Patrol Commander, this role requires significant independent judgment and personal initiative while adhering to departmental policies, standard operating procedures, and applicable county and state statutes. This position includes an on-call arrangement for scene processing and documentation.

The CUPD is a full-service police agency with 46 sworn and 36 non-sworn employees providing community-based public safety services to a diverse community of 36,000 affiliates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Every year the department responds to approximately 20,000 calls for service and ensures the safety and security for all of their PAC-12 Conference athletic events with attendance at football games exceeding 50,000 fans. Patrolling the campus by foot, bicycle, motorcycle, and vehicle, the CU Boulder Police work diligently with the University community and surrounding agencies to ensure a timely and coordinated law enforcement response.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Property and Evidence Management: Monitor the disposition of property and evidence to ensure compliance with legal, policy, and procedural requirements.
  • Accreditation and Standards: Support continuous adherence to accreditation standards and assist in assessing, developing, and implementing procedures for the Property and Evidence Section.
  • Reporting and Audits: Assist in creating monthly reports, conducting inventory, and preparing audit reports.
  • Scene Processing and Forensic Services: Provide scene services and laboratory processing for the Investigations Section, using professional forensic techniques or coordinating with external laboratory partners.
  • Project Management and Training: Oversee workflow improvements, coordinate member training, and manage the maintenance or upgrade of specialized equipment and software.

This role plays a vital part in maintaining the operational excellence of the Property and Evidence Section and ensuring that CUPD's standards align with standard practices.

What We Can Offer


The hourly rate for this temporary position is $38.00 - $42.00 per hour.

What We Require

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • At least 3+ years of experience directly related to the work assignment.
  • Additional licenses, certifications, essential or critical services, motor vehicle or financial checks, and campus security authority status may be required as described in the approved position description.


What You Will Need

  • Legal and Procedural Expertise: Frequently reviews law enforcement case records to determine evidence retention requirements in compliance with federal, state, and municipal laws.
  • Evidence Disposition: Demonstrates the ability to make informed decisions on the disposition of evidence, including lab submission, in-house processing, return to owners, or storage based on case requirements.
  • Compliance and Quality Assurance: Assists with reviewing property submissions from Patrol Officers, ensuring proper packaging, disposition, and accurate data entry in alignment with departmental procedures.
  • Scene Judgment and Documentation: Exercises professional judgment on scenes to identify, document, and collect relevant items, producing detailed and legally compliant reports that meet investigative and court standards.
  • Training and Oversight: Supports training initiatives, evaluates research conducted by Property and Evidence Specialists, and ensures the completeness and accuracy of case review packets.
