The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology invites applications for a Field Assistant in Costal Maine!
Description: Coastal ecosystems in the Gulf of Maine are experiencing some of the fastest rates of warming of any coastal region on Earth. In this project, we seek a temporary field assistant to work with a field team out of Colby College to survey and maintain an ongoing field experiment to quantify how rocky intertidal ecosystems in Maine are responding to these rapid changes. During the months of September through at least December 2024 with possibility for extension through the Spring 2, we seek a field assistant to spend periods of time up to one week, twice a month (overnight Monday-Friday) at our field research station on Allen Island (Port Clyde, ME). Food and lodging on the island will be covered, as well as any necessary field gear. Field station amenities include: heated bunkhouse, full kitchen, laundry, wifi, individual bedroom. Working hours will be roughly 10 hours per day, dependent on conditions, with free time between daily low tides.
Fieldwork in coastal rocky intertidal ecosystems consists of very early mornings and long hours in the outdoors, rain, snow, or shine. Conditions can range from hot and sunny to cold, wet, and windy. The most important skills for this job will be: ability to work in teams, ability to troubleshoot and improvise under uncertain or uncomfortable conditions, reliability, ability to communicate with team leaders especially in uncertain or uncomfortable conditions, attention to safety and detail, and stick-to-itiveness. What You Should Know

What We Can Offer
The hourly rate for this position is $20-25.00 per hour.

What We Require
- Able to spend several days in the field at a remote research station
- Able to swim
- Strong communication skills
- Strong attention to detail, organized record keeping and note taking
- Ability to work in a small team
- Can carry 25 lbs. in a backpack while hiking several miles, and lift 40 lbs.
- Attention to safety and good spatial awareness
- Ability to work safely at night
- Access to transportation to/from Port Clyde, ME
- Post-secondary coursework in a relevant field (biology, ecology, marine biology, environmental science, or related)
- Experience and comfort with outdoor conditions: hiking experience in all season conditions and uneven terrain, or comparable experience in a physically demanding environment.
