Job Summary:
The CU College of Nursing is seeking a full-time faculty member within the Clinical Teaching Faculty Series to teach in simulation and other clinical environments. The work location for this faculty position is in Durango, Colorado on the Fort Lewis College campus.
Ideal candidates will have teaching and scholarship experience. This individual will also hold a faculty appointment of Instructor, Sr. Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Teaching Professor, or Professor within the Clinical Teaching Track. Faculty rank will depend on the candidate's qualifications and experience. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and community members from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
This position will provide expertise essential for the integration and operation of clinical education where students engage in the practice of nursing skills and theory applications for the CU College of Nursing simulation location on the Fort Lewis College campus in Durango, Colorado. They will report to the Assistant Dean of Clinical Simulation and be a member of the CU Nursing clinical education teaching team. Some weekends and night shifts will be required to meet the demands of clinical teaching across all programs and locations.
This faculty member will teach in both simulation and at clinical agencies for clinical rotations. The role of faculty that teach in clinical education is integral to providing a high-quality student experience. As an individual who interfaces directly with students, faculty that teach in the simulation and clinical environment are responsible for providing an engaging clinical education experience by maintaining competency in the subject matter being taught, preparing teaching materials in alignment with current best practice guidelines, and serving as a role model to students for professionalism. Faculty assigned to clinical education serve as a collaborator between the clinical simulation, clinical rotations, and the classroom experience to integrate classroom content with today's practice environment.
This position focuses on assisting students to develop skills needed to succeed in a progressive clinical education learning environment that incorporates ongoing innovative strategies for competency development. Availability and motivation for formal initial training and ongoing self-directed learning will be required; and maintaining clinical competence through ongoing engagement in direct patient care through faculty practice.
Examples of Work Performed may include:
- Facilitate learning by engaging students in high-level learning activities related to application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of course content in a clinical learning environment.
- Remain current with best practices in teaching pedagogy, clinical management skills and cognitive learning theories.
- Maintain clinical relevancy regarding guidelines and interventions pertinent to patient care. Serve as a role model to teach students how to interact, assess and make sound clinical decisions.
- Honor and uphold the Healthcare Simulationist Code of Ethics.
- Contribute to a psychologically safe learning environment by emphasizing that simulation is a place to learn free of judgement, foster the free exchange of constructive feedback, encourage collaborative teamwork, clearly outline expectations, and cultivate a positive learning environment.
- Collaborate with teaching team(s) to foster continued quality improvement and shared decision making related to course content and assignments, clinical experiences, and/or evaluation methods.
- Embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion in the clinical learning environment. Provide a climate of mutual respect, open communication, and collaboration. Act as a role model for patient-centered care.
- Evaluate student application of knowledge.
- Facilitate student learning in direct care environments (such as clinical rotations) that serve as an extension of the lab experience.
- Participate in professional development activities that address desired learning outcomes and align with an individual's role and the priorities of the institution.
- Use of educational technology, task training devices, and computer assisted instructional tools in the skills laboratory and classroom settings for teaching, learning, practice, and assessment of clinical competencies.
- Promote accountability among students by implementing clear guidelines and expectations for preparation, engagement, and self-directed study/practice.
- Incorporate current best practices in simulation literature, technology, and learning theory.
- Clinical Teaching Track faculty are encouraged to contribute to the body of knowledge in simulation (e.g., publications, editorials, empirical research, blogs, social media, and presentations)
- Participating in professional service to the CU Nursing community

Work Location:
Primarily onsite related to simulation teaching assignments and clinical site visits with periodic times of remote work in between. Primary work location is the Fort Lewis College campus in Durango, Colorado. Clinical site locations may vary across the Durango area based on need.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:
Instructor of Clinical Teaching: $86,500 - $96,700 annually at 1.0 FTE
Sr. Instructor of Clinical Teaching: $90,800 - 96,200 at 1.0 FTE
Assistant Professor of Clinical Teaching: $95,000 - $115,000 annually at 1.0 FTE
Associate Professor of Clinical Teaching: $115,000 to $125,000 annually at 1.0 FTE
Professor of Clinical Teaching: $130,000 to $155,000 annually at 1.0 FTE
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.

Instructor of Clinical Teaching
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited nursing school/college.
- A master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
- A record of demonstrated effectiveness in teaching, collegial collaboration, and commitment to a program of scholarship to qualify for the rank of Instructor of Clinical Teaching in the Clinical Series: Clinical Teaching Track.
- Eligible to obtain an unencumbered nursing license in Colorado.
- Two years of professional nursing experience within the past five years.
Senior Instructor of Clinical Teaching
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited nursing school/college.

- A record of demonstrated effectiveness in teaching, collegial collaboration, and commitment to a program of scholarship to qualify for the rank of Assistant Professor of Clinical Teaching in the Clinical Series: Clinical Teaching Track.
- Eligible to obtain an unencumbered State of Colorado RN License.
- Two years of professional nursing experience within the past five years.
Associate Professor of Clinical Teaching
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited nursing school/college.
- A master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
- A Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or an earned doctorate in an appropriate field of science, nursing, social science, education, or related area;
- A record of demonstrated effectiveness in teaching, collegial collaboration, and commitment to a program of scholarship to qualify for the rank of Associate Professor of Clinical Teaching in the Clinical Series: Clinical Teaching Track;
- Minimum qualifications for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor of Clinical Teaching include recognition as an expert teacher and sustained commitment to a program of scholarship
- Eligible to obtain an unencumbered nursing license in Colorado.
Professor of Clinical Teaching
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited nursing school/college.
- A master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
- A Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or an earned doctorate in an appropriate field of science, nursing, social science, education, or related area.
- A record of demonstrated effectiveness in teaching, collegial collaboration, and commitment to a program of scholarship to qualify for the rank of Professor of Clinical Teaching in the Clinical Series: Clinical Teaching Track;
- Minimum qualifications for appointment at the rank of Professor of Clinical Teaching include recognition as a master teacher, sustained leadership in teaching, expertise in curriculum development and teaching innovations, and a sustained commitment to peer-reviewed scholarly work.
- Eligible to obtain an unencumbered nursing license in Colorado.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience teaching in simulation or skill acquisition.
- Experience teaching in the clinical environment as a Clinical Instructor.
- Expertise in acute and primary care across the lifespan (adult and pediatric), obstetrics, and/or psychiatric mental health.
- Collaborative record of teaching and scholarship.
