Job Summary


The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) within the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for a full-time Technical Writer. The Technical Writer, part of the Science Communications Group, interacts with several teams at NSIDC to publish and maintain cryospheric data sets for use by the scientific communities served by NSIDC. The Technical Writer creates and maintains documentation for a broad array of scientific data sets describing remote sensing, airborne, or in situ data. This includes researching and writing about the acquisition, instrumentation, algorithms, and processing methods employed to produce the data. In addition to data set user guides, the Technical Writer manages metadata information and publishes associated web content.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), affiliated with CIRES, at the University of Colorado Boulder, is a key national hub for snow and ice research. Operating as part of CIRES, NSIDC supports research on Earth's cryosphere, including snow, ice, glaciers, frozen ground, and climate interactions. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Research and summarize scientific and technical information for the development of data set documentation, web content, other technical documents, and graphics (40%)
  • Create, manage, and update metadata records pertaining to NSIDC data sets (30%)
  • Participate in NSIDC product teams to communicate user community requirements and provide documentation and metadata standard processes (10%)
  • Coordinate interactions with product team members to ensure timely and efficient publication of data sets (5%)
  • Create and update the written web content related to a data product (5%)
  • Create written tutorials on how to use data-specific tools (5%)
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and application of NSIDC technical writing standards and guidelines for style, grammar, and format (5%)


What You Should Know

  • This position has the option for a hybrid work modality. CIRES and NSIDC are currently supporting a high degree of work modality flexibility. Hybrid work arrangements will follow current CIRES and university guidance and policies.

  • CIRES offers a generous compensation and benefits package.
  • The annual hiring salary for this position ranges from $58,300 - $91,000. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.

What We Require

  • Masters degree in a science discipline OR Bachelors degree in a science discipline plus three years of professional writing experience.
  • Experience working with scientific data.
  • A portfolio of work demonstrating advanced scientific and technical writing skills, including the ability to write for specialized and expert audiences, as well as the ability to write clear, jargon-free text for broader audiences.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to legally work in the United States on a full-time basis.
