Job Summary:

Under the administrative supervision of the Operations Manager, the Retail Assistant provides customer service both in person and on the phone, organizes and maintains all cashier paperwork, operates a cash register, maintains the front counter, and stocks/merchandises general merchandise. The Retail Assistant trains and leads the shift of Student workers/temporary staff, provides guidance to off sites in the evening, and closes the operation of the Grayslake LancerZone.

Job Description:

50% Student/Customer Service

  • Responsible for the closing operation of the Grayslake LancerZone as well as providing guidance for the off sites during the evening in the absence of the Operations Manager
  • Assists in training and supervising temporary staff and student workers.
  • Operates a cash register ringing up cash, credit card, and financial aid sales for customers.
  • Provides excellent customer service by answering questions for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Performs customer returns and re-stocks returned merchandise as needed
  • Answers bookstore phone, retrieves voice mail messages, and updates bookstore phone message.
  • Conducts daily textbook buy back transactions as needed.
  • Counts down cash drawer at the end of the shift and helps with opening/closing cash office procedures.
  • Works to keep cashier areas neat, organized, and stocked with needed supplies

20% Inventory and Merchandising

  • Prices and stocks general merchandise; creates merchandise displays as needed
  • Straightens general merchandise areas and dusts merchandise displays
  • Uses inventory system to complete transfers between stores
  • Places reorders for selected general merchandise categories and completes purchase orders into inventory management system
  • Completes cycle counts of selected departments to ensure inventory is correct
  • Completes year-end inventory with bookstore staff

20% Data Entry Records Coordination

  • Creates training materials, updates and maintains procedure/direction book concerning all cashiering functions
  • Enters data required for financial aid, sorts, and organizes financial aid paperwork
  • Sorts and organizes all paperwork pertaining to the cashier area, credit card and refund slips, department charges, financial aid forms and vouchers, etc.
  • Keeps track of gift card/Dining Dollar sales and Ventra sales
  • Completes daily sales reports at end of shift
  • Completes safe counts and works with Accounting Assistant to request change orders as needed

10% Other

  • Ability to open store if needed
  • Ability to works shifts at the offsite campus stores as needed
  • Receives items into inventory management system
  • Completes online order fulfillment
  • Expands hours during busy times and works 1 Saturday per semester
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to lead and direct student workers and/or cashiers in daily job duties
  • Cash handling and retail experience.
  • Friendly and outgoing with customer service experience.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to move up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to work at the Waukegan or Vernon Hills location.
  • Ability to work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Desired Qualifications

  • Retail supervisory experience.
  • Flexibility is a plus.
  • Experience with an inventory control system.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish.

Hours:

Monday-Thursday 1:30pm-7:45pm

Hourly Rate:

$15.59/hr.
