Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Grounds, and the direction of Lead Groundskeepers, operates equipment for the Grounds Department on a regular and continuing basis, both on and off campus. Assists with routine grounds maintenance tasks in all locations. In compliance with HDAE goals and objectives, affirms and implements the department's Educational Equity Plan comprised of short- and long-term objectives that reflect a systematic approach to preparing both students and staff for success in a multicultural society. Works in an environment that is ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic. Works in a team environment.

Required Qualifications:
  • 1-3 years experience in the operation of medium to heavy, power grounds equipment.
  • 1-3 years experience in institutional or commercial landscape maintenance and installation.
  • 1-3 years demonstrated knowledge of plant care, safe equipment use, landscape irrigation principles, and horticultural pest control.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions in English.
  • 1 - 3 Years Experience in the operation of medium to heavy, power grounds equipment.
  • 1 - 3 Years Experience in institutional or commercial landscape maintenance and installation.
  • 1-3 Years Demonstrated knowledge of plant care, safe equipment use, landscape irrigation principles, and horticultural pest control.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
  • 60% Operation & Maintenance - Works with the Grounds Leads, and Superintendent of Grounds on the maintenance and upkeep of property for Housing, Dining, Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE). Operates riding mowers of various types and sizes. Operates equipment such as backhoes, skip loaders, front end loaders, hydraulic lifts, trenchers, power thatchers, Kabota and /or other tractors and loaders of various sizes. Mechanical duties that would include routine maintenance and repairing/upkeep of grounds equipment used by this person. This would include, in cooperation with the Grounds Mechanic, the upkeep and implementation of accurate records for each piece of equipment used by the person in this position. Responsible for the safe usage of all large and small power equipment and tools assigned to this position by the Grounds Department.


  • 40% Groundskeeping - Provides assistance in the area of Groundskeeper duties such as: Mowing, water, weeding, seeding, fertilizing and related duties in the assigned area. Assists in installation and maintenance of automatic lawn irrigation systems. Assists in chemical and fertilizer applications on lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers. Operates power and non-power handheld equipment. Installs/repairs asphalt, cement and parking lots as needed. Promotes a quality service environment to all students, staff and customers. Participates in staff training and development workshops, retreats and meetings as determined by Supervisor. Grounds projects that would include work such as landscape construction, irrigation installation, concrete and/or asphalt work, moving and relocation of soil, and planting and relocation of any plant material as required. Complies with the department safety program. Performs any other duties as assigned or required by the Grounds Department. Develops, promotes, and adheres to safety rules, standards or techniques as an integral part of business. Adheres and implements the 20-minute work rule for all repetitive work tasks. Affirms and implements the departmental "Strategic Plan" designing goals and objectives that relate to the vision statement.
