DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM SUMMARY

Project CENTRO: Centering Estudiantes, Nepantla, Tradiciones, Research, and Orgullo, is a USDOE Title V HSI grant at CSUMB. Project CENTRO, guided by Project Director Dr. Suzanne Garcia-Mateus, aims to further develop El Centro for students, significantly focused on Latine student success work by providing culturally relevant support services and promoting an inclusive campus environment. The project will focus on three main strategies: Connection & Belonging (fostering authentic connections between students, faculty, and staff, and drive intentional student success support programs, including the Undocu-success Center, will be achieved through mentorship, coaching, and holistic engagement); Professional & Institutional Learning (aiming to cultivate a supportive learning environment that values both academic and affective outcomes); and Capacity & Infrastructure (a focus on strengthening CSUMB's ability to serve a diverse group of students, especially Latine students (e.g. including those from an undocumented/mixed-status backgrounds) through the establishment of inclusive and physically relevant space for El Centro, and the mining, sharing and analyses of HSI related data for increased student success outcomes. El Centro intends to improve student retention, particularly for Latine students, reduce drop, fail, and withdraw (DFW) rates, increase four-year degree completion, and enhance students' sense of belonging. The program outcomes will be assessed through data analysis of enrollment, retention, degree completion, sense of belonging, and Pell utilization.

The position also supports the Undocu-Success Center, which supports students, especially undocumented students, students from mixed-status families, and other immigrant students by providing helpful information complemented with guidance and support from staff and the student ambassadors. The Undocu-Success Center partners with other programs on campus, and community organizations to create events that welcome students into our campus, in order to increase retention rates, aid undocumented students in understanding local, state, and national laws & policies affecting them, and to create a greater understanding of the undocumented narrative on and off campus. The Undocu-Success Center provides K-12 partners with information on how to better support their students impacted by undocumented policies, as well as academic and career options available to them, host UndocuAlly training and facilitate workshops, develop English and Spanish promotional materials, and continually update the Undocu-Success website.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the leadership of and reporting to the Director of the Otter Cross Cultural Center (OC3), under the general guidance from the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, and the VP for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, the Associate Director will provide guidance for El Centro Initiatives and activities on campus in order to increase student enrollment, retention, persistence, and graduation rates, especially for Latine students. The Associate Director will lead professional development activities and will support the PI with action research activities. The Associate Director will supervise project staff, and ensure objectives are met in coordination with the Director of OC3, AVP/Dean of Students, VP of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, and the Project Director.

Working collaboratively and in cooperation with the Project Director of El Centro and the Director of OC3, the Associate Director will foster an inclusive, dynamic resource environment for diverse student populations. This position provides strategic guidance, comprehensive training, and robust support to enable students and their supporters to access information about CSUMB programs, undocumented guidelines and policies, the healthy exchange of ideas, the development of self-advocacy skills, and to build a supportive community. This role is instrumental in delivering information and strategic direction to enhance the educational success, retention, and graduation rates of students, especially diverse students. As the lead for El Centro, the Associate Director is responsible for facilitating and managing the center which is dedicated to supporting student communities, especially the Latine, Afro-Latine, Chicane, and Hispanic community at the university. This role is pivotal in promoting student engagement, academic success, cultural pride, empowerment, and leadership opportunities within an inclusive and supportive environment.

With supervision from the Director of OC3, this position is responsible for guiding and overseeing the El Centro Program Coordinator, student staff, and interns in El Centro, Undocu-Success and/or students assigned from the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. The Associate Director will also work closely with the project's Research Analyst to request data and make measurable the affective/liberatory outcomes the Participatory Action Research teams will utilize as the basis of their work.

The role demands staying current on trends and best practices for supporting students from historically marginalized communities. This role is also tasked with identifying and pursuing funding opportunities and supporting fundraising initiatives. Lastly, with the guidance of the PI, this role will engage faculty and staff on providing professional development opportunities to make resources on campus culturally relevant to students.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following:

  • Ensure institutional coordination and support for all strategies to be implemented
  • Develop equity-based programming for all grant outcomes using the Seal of Excelencia's recommendations as appropriate
  • Develop programming for students to assure academic, social, career and academic success strategies are assisting students toward graduation
  • Create culturally relevant programs for students of color, low-income students, and first-generation students
  • Establish policies and procedures for project oversight and meeting target schedule
  • Assist in program evaluation and data collection efforts to measure outcomes and ensure continuous improvement and develop and disseminate communications related to El Centro and UndocuSuccess students
  • Participation in all regular meetings with Project Director/other CSUMB personnel as needed
  • Present at campus meetings as needed creating meeting minutes to ensure accountability for both the position as well as institutional change
  • Prepare oral and written reports, when needed, on issues and concerns of students, especially Latine students
  • Develop surveys and other instruments to measure student outcomes and other aspects of program effectiveness
  • Collaborate/encourage all student services managers and practitioners to participate fully in project activities, particularly inquiry and evaluation related to cross-functional cooperation
  • Launch campus-embedded outreach and promotion of El Centro services
  • Serve as a point of contact for resources and relationships with other campus offices
  • Hire, supervise, and onboard professional and student staff, and interns through HR processes
  • In collaboration with the PI, develop equity-based programming for all grant outcomes
  • Update community communication plan and schedule
  • Hold alumni/ae forums to update on progress and solicit mentors
  • In collaboration with the PI, select faculty, staff, and admin to participate in ESCALA institute
  • Work with Enrollment Management to design, plan and implement prospective students, especially Latine and/or undocumented students and family informational sessions
  • Support OC3 with recognition ceremonies for degree completers
  • Work closely with the Office of Financial Aid and the Director of Care and Basic Needs to facilitate relief for challenges that impact student progress
  • Under the guidance of Enrollment Management directors, schedule and coordinate enrollment and registration events for new and at-risk students
  • Under the guidance of the Director of New Student Programs and Enrollment Management, facilitate and schedule programming and orientation for new incoming students, especially undocumented and/or Latine students
  • Design, produce and implement El Centro and/or undocumented workshops and informational sessions, and distribute activity schedules for current and prospective students and families
  • Update and manage resources on the website and social media accounts
  • Maintain up to date information on resources and services for students
  • Implement activities that would support the academic, personal, and professional growth of students, particularly Latine and immigrants on campus.
  • Work in collaboration with the Director of the Otter Cross Cultural Center and PI of El Centro in the following ways:
    • Participation in all regular meetings with CSUMB Grant Management personnel
    • Participate in the establishment of the HSI/MSI Initiatives Committee
    • Hold launch event for Participatory Action Research (PAR) and place experiential learning students on PAT teams

OTHER FUNCTIONS
  1. Performs other duties as assigned.

  3. Promote and maintain an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

  • Masters degree in Education or in a field related to serving students of color (including but not limited to Social Work, Ethnic Studies, Non-Profit Management, Organizational Psychology)
AND
  • 2-5 years of experience in project management

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB El Centro Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence.
  • Experience working with students and families from a Latine background

The hiring range for this position is $75,000 - $82,000. Classification: Grade 7, Management. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
