This role will function as Outdoor Services Turf Manager being responsible for Turf & Irrigation Maintenance. Duties will include hiring, training, assigning tasks, coaching, monitoring progress, approving or correcting the work of subordinate employees daily and performing associated administrative duties. This position may review construction documents as it pertains to irrigation. This position also has snow removal responsibilities.

Who We Are


Facilities Management provides outdoor services to general fund areas and to several auxiliary funded facilities. Facilities Management Outdoor Services is responsible for grounds maintenance and irrigation system operation and maintenance for the general fund areas on campus.


What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Irrigation System Control
  • Manage irrigation and fertilizer injection systems campus wide based on site observations. Irrigation management includes data verification, data entry, individual zone ET adjustments, expanding the raw water delivery system to areas currently fed with potable water, troubleshooting radio communications from the central computer to the clocks. Manage and repair/replace soil sensor system. Responsible for renewal and FCC compliance needs for the University irrigation system radio frequencies. Identify procedural needs and coordinate with other departments to ensure consistency of irrigation practices on Campus. Monitor and add revisions to the Campus Standards in support of this program. Responsible for annual renewal of Fertigation permit. Represent the University to others relative to Compost Tea program. Train and supervise employees who conduct repairs or system maintenance, ditch monitoring and maintenance and irrigation computer scheduling. Other areas of irrigation responsibility include holding ponds, pump stations and University laterals providing ditch water to campus from the New Anderson, Smith/Goss and Skunk Creek Ditch systems. Represent University interests to each Ditch Board. Document water usage for Colorado, general fund and auxiliary customers. Annual review of Raw Water Budget and capital equipment needs. Coordinate irrigation issues with contractors, project managers, special events and auxiliary departments. Ensure irrigation system as-built' drawings are maintained and updated annually.

Turf Management
  • Lead and coordinate turf management program by scheduling field mowing, top dressing, aeration, over seeding, fertilization, chemical applications, and rough mowing. Figure out the best management practices for staff to carry out these duties. Oversee the maintenance, operation, and calibration of turf equipment including mowers, trimmers, aerators, top dressers, broadcast and drop spreaders, tractors, chemical sprayers, utility vehicles and other power or hand tools. Train staff in correct and safe operations, schedule staff to perform these tasks and establish expectations for work quality. Identify locations for soil testing collection and submit samples for analysis. Analyze results and determine nutrient deficiencies/surpluses. Figure out fertilizer nutrients based on soil sample analysis. Figure out fertilizer rates and ensure calibration of equipment is correct. Research and analyze NTEP reports to decide the best grass cultivars/seed species for Boulder Campus. Coordinate with Campus Landscape Architect on native seed species/cultivars. Purchase materials and ensure adequate stock is available. Analyze site conditions for turf repairs and manage grow-in establishment. Analyze and run the non-functional turf program by identifying, prioritizing, and coordinating the spending of available funding. Identify procedural needs/coordinate with other departments to ensure consistency of turf management practices and appearance on Campus. Monitor/add revisions to Campus Standards to support this program. Submit year-end reports to the Assistant Director of FM Outdoor Services.

Office/Work Section Management
  • Working with direct report supervisors, establish training needs, set work standards and schedules, identify/prioritize assignments, monitor/guide work in progress, approve or correct final results for these functions for all work groups managed. Ensure accurate accounting by reviewing and approving timecards and requests for time off. Provide leadership, coaching and performance management for assigned employees. Create PDQ'S for new positions and update existing PDQ'S to accurately reflect job duties. Interview and hire subordinate positions. Work with direct report supervisors to manage budgets, spending, maintenance projects and agreements. Develop and manage service agreements for Turf and Irrigation Management. Establish and maintain maintenance standards by working with the Assistant Director, Campus Landscape Architect, building proctors, vendors, assigned staff, and other supervisors within Facilities Management. Conduct inspections to identify problems and schedule work to correct these items. Respond to inquiries regarding these areas by phone, e-mail and personal contact. Act as the Event Coordinator for Outdoor Services, review and approve special events to mitigate damages to Outdoor Services systems. Coordinate with Facilities Management purchasing agent on purchase orders, bids, and vendor SPO's to ensure proper allocation of funds. Respond to calls from the Operations Control Center for service and coordinate with appropriate supervisors or Trades shops to address requests.

Snow & Ice Removal
  • Conduct snow removal and ice abatement to reduce campus liability. Operate plowing equipment (JEEP with plow) to clear snow from sidewalks, streets and parking lots in a timely manner. Other areas serviced may include recharge facilities, including CU Events Center, Folsom Stadium and Parking Structures and/or Lots. Designated Essential Services and expected to respond to perform snow removal as required based on university needs and activities. Train, coordinate, and review work of employees. Communicate report times for snow removal operations to all direct employees.

Safety
  • Contribute to a safe working environment for self, co-workers, students, staff, faculty and the public. Document monthly safety training for assigned staff. Adhere to and train others in safety guidelines, especially concerning equipment operation, chemical applications, and the use of personal protective equipment. Report unsafe conditions to the Operations Control Center as appropriate. Report and properly document all workplace accidents and ensure injured employees follow appropriate on the job injury protocols, follow Doctors restrictions, and support departmental return to work program. Ensure Labels and Materials Safety Data Sheets are updated and available for materials stored at GROC and satellite locations.


What You Should Know

  • This in-person position will work five (5) eight-hour days per week Monday - Friday, between the hours of 6:00 am and 5:00 pm, based on staffing requirements of the Department.
  • This role is eligible for our Facilities Management Employee Referral Program.


What We Can Offer

  • The annual salary range for this position is $66,804- $87,000.
  • If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024.

What We Require

  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply.

  • Five years of relevant experience OR a combination of related education and/or relevant experience equal to five (5) years.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Colorado Department of Agriculture Qualified Supervisor License with categories 206 (Turf Pest Control), and 207 (Ornamental Pest Control) within 12 months of hire or possess one currently.
