Director of Financial Aid

The University of Tennessee at Martin is accepting applications for a Director of Financial Aid & Scholarships. The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships is housed within Enrollment Management in the Division of Academic Affairs. Financial Aid and Scholarships is a high-energy, forward-thinking department that simultaneously handles multiple, on-going projects. This position will require frequent interaction with current and potential students and families at the Martin campus and all six Centers, high schools, supervisees, colleagues within enrollment management, and faculty/staff from across UTM's campuses. This position will require occasional night and weekend hours.

The Director is ultimately responsible for compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations regarding the awarding and disbursement of financial aid refunds. The Director works closely to enhance and improve the overall enrollment (recruitment, engagement, progression) processes. The Director plays a key role in ensuring the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships is continually assessing its activities and service to provide outstanding support to the constituents of UT Martin.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Applying the institution's mission and values to the administration of student financial aid;
  • Providing leadership and support and supervision to the Financial Aid and Scholarship staff ensuring high quality customer service by providing training and development, guidance on new regulations and policies, preparing and conducting performance evaluations;
  • Ensuring students and families receive first-class, student-centered support and service;
  • Complying with and applying all appropriate state and federal regulations that pertain to student financial aid;
  • Overseeing all Title IV, federal, state, and institutional aid ensuring proper awarding, eligibility disbursement and reconciliation;
  • Reviewing and evaluating the effect of institutional policies, procedures, and academic structures on program eligibility and student eligibility;
  • Planning the development and implementation of strategic initiatives to enhance the enrollment (recruitment, engagement, and progression) for a qualified and diverse student body;
  • Advising and providing feedback to university administrators with regard to innovative financial aid strategies related to recruitment and retention;
  • Assisting with data collection to identify patterns, trends, and relationships;
  • Drafting and editing written communications for prospective and current students and families;
  • Coordinating regular and recurring visits to each of the six UTM Centers;
  • Monitoring the budget for Financial Aid and Scholarships;
  • Assisting with recruiting prospective students and families, including high school visits, community college visits, college fairs, award nights/events, and individual visits where appropriate;
  • Preparing and presenting Financial Aid and Scholarship presentations to various audiences;
  • Engaging actively in professional and personal development activities and events;
  • Serving on committees, working on special projects, and undertaking special assignments promoting Financial Aid and Scholarships, Enrollment Management, and UT Martin;
  • Promoting the University to a variety of constituent groups to enhance both the recruitment of students and the image of the University;
  • Representing the University positively to the City of Martin and surrounding communities;
  • Serving as a member of the Enrollment Management Leadership Team;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The minimum qualifications are:
  • Bachelor's degree (Master's Preferred) from an accredited institution;
  • 5 years of financial aid and/or enrollment management experience, preferably at the Assistant Director level or higher;
  • Experience with staff supervision.

The desired qualifications are:
  • 8 years of financial aid experience, including supervising staff;
  • Experience of institutional aid leveraging models and professional judgment;
  • Proven track record of effective management in a student financial aid setting;
  • Knowledge and experience in leveraging financial aid as an enrollment management tool, specifically in recruitment and retention;
  • Elevated sense of personal initiative, integrity, and accountability;
  • A record of excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills that allow for frequent and comfortable conversations with students, families, administrators, staff, and faculty;
  • Strong listening, written and oral communication skills;
  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
  • Track record of professional development and engagement with appropriate professional organizations, preferably in NASFAA, SASFAA, and/or TASFAA;
  • History of utilizing technology to engage constituents;
  • Experienced user of Banner.

Supervision Received

This position will report to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management. In-person and e-mail contact is expected on a regular and frequent basis. Written reports may be expected concerning specific situations. The person in this position is expected to hold regular office hours and check e-mail frequently.
