Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking a dedicated Lead Custodian to join our team. In this role, you will supervise full-time, part-time, and temporary custodial staff, ensuring excellence in floor care, cleaning, furniture setup and moving, and adherence to safety procedures. You'll play a pivotal role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. Regular rotations between work areas provide variety and are implemented at the supervisor's discretion to support operational needs. This full-time position offers a consistent evening schedule, with hours from 4:15 PM to 1:15 AM, Monday through Friday, providing a stable and structured work routine.

Summary of Responsibilities

Supervises and trains full-time, part-time and temporary custodial personnel in all custodial operations.
Trains and ensures safety in working with hazardous chemicals, cleanup of body fluids, ladders, lifts and other equipment.
Adheres to department cleaning, lock-up/unlocking, and furniture set-up in order to provide proper facilities cleanliness.
Maintains inventory and issues supplies to custodians.
Helps the campus and facilities maintain a good public image by providing a safe, clean, comfortable environment conducive to learning.
Performs and ensures the daily maintenance and cleanliness of custodial equipment.
Reports building and equipment repair needs to the Custodial Supervisor.
Assumes duties of custodian, other leads and some duties of the custodial supervisors in their absence.
Builds team cohesion and unity while addressing potential discord between team members.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent AND one year of full-time custodial experience, including some supervision. Part-time experience will be prorated.

Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent AND any combination of post-high school and/or full-time paid experience related to the summary of duties, totaling one year.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge

Knowledge of training in proper use of hazardous chemicals and products.
Knowledge of cleanup and proper protection from body fluids.
Knowledge of pest control.
Knowledge of all floor types such as, cement, wood, vinyl, and ceramic tile as well as carpet fibers, weaves and backings.
Knowledge of waxes/polishes, acids, common cleaning chemicals, buffers, extractors, vacuums and scrubbers.
Knowledge of general maintenance operations.

Skills

Good interpersonal communication skills.
Good interpersonal, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Computer use such as Microsoft Office Suite and CMMS software (desktop and apps).

Abilities

Ability to supervise and provide on-the-job training.
Ability to perform heavy lifting with the ability to expend arduous physical effort and to work in conditions that may involve some hazards and considerable discomforts.
Problem solving, prioritization, and delegation.
