Part-Time Peer Interpreter (Student Position)
Position offered pending successful completion of free Peer Interpreter Training (evaluated for academic credit towards program through Credit for Prior Learning) followed by Employment as a Peer Interpreter
Campus Location: Lynn
Non-benefited position; grant-funded
COMPENSATION:
- Program Completion and Micro-Internship Stipend $200
- Peer Interpreter Employment $17.33 p/h
Pre-Employment Free Training* Schedule:
The course format includes four videoconference sessions via Zoom and six in-person sessions on campus, with the following dates 1-4pm:
- February 19, 26
- March 5, 12
- March 19, 26
- April 2, 9, 16, 23 (or 30th)
- *Please note that Peer Interpreters may earn up to 6 academic credits through Credit for Prior
- Learning (pending applicability to program of study).
Post-Training Peer Interpreting Schedule:
- 10 Hours per week TBD in collaboration with Peer Interpreters
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Upon successful completion of the Peer Interpreting Training Program, Peer Interpreters assist with college departments, events, and other venues as needed by interpreting for Spanish-speaking students and their families. The work involves oral translation from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish. Fosters seamless communication among students, faculty, staff, and administrators from various linguistic backgrounds. Performs duties with linguistic proficiency, cultural understanding, and ethical integrity.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Interpret from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English during College events, e.g. Registration Events, Information Sessions, Open Houses, Orientations, Commencements, Community Events, College Departments (TBD in accordance with scheduled hours)
- Assists Spanish-speaking students and their families with the school enrollment process as needed
- Serves as liaison between NSCC and Hispanic groups and organizations in the community.
- Through interpreting services, assists school staff in understanding and appreciating the Hispanic culture.
- Performs other related work as required.
Job Requirements:
- Successful completion of Peer Interpreter Training
- Commitment to 10 hours per week as a Peer Interpreter post-training (schedules TBD in collaboration with each Peer Interpreter)
- Demonstrate linguistic proficiency in interpreting between languages (Spanish/English).
- Apply cultural competency to navigate diverse contexts respectfully.
- Employ various interpreting techniques effectively in real-world scenarios.
- Facilitate clear and meaningful communication between parties.
- Adhere to ethical guidelines and maintain confidentiality.
- Analyze communication challenges and adapt interpreting strategies accordingly. Pursue continuous improvement.
- If a current English Language learner, successful completion of LNG 104 or equivalent
- Successful completion of intermediate Spanish CLEP test and/or in-person interview with the program coordinator or Director
- Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.
