The Penn Medicine Nudge Unit is currently recruiting a talented design and innovation project leader with a passion for behavior change. The Penn Medicine Nudge Unit is an exciting and fast-paced opportunity for motivated, entrepreneurial individuals to improve health and effect systemic change at Penn Medicine and across the healthcare industry.

The Penn Medicine Nudge Unit is a joint venture between the Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Innovation (CHCI) and the University of Pennsylvania Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics (CHIBE). Founded in 2016, the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit is the world's first behavioral design team embedded within a health system. The Nudge Unit leverages insights from behavioral and implementation science to design, implement, evaluate, and disseminate scalable nudges to steer medical decision-making toward higher-value care, improved patient outcomes, and more equitable health care delivery. Consistent throughout the work of the Nudge Unit is a desire to make the right choice the easy choice.

Since 2016, the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit worked on more than 100 projects, most of which include testing interventions within health systems, including more than 25 randomized trials resulting in over 100 publications in leading medical journals such as NEJM, JAMA, Nature, and PNAS. The Nudge Unit currently supports a broad portfolio of projects to improve care with Penn Medicine as well as an extramurally funded program of research aimed at improving acute care and the prevention of overdoses and injuries. In its portfolio, the Nudge Unit commonly leverages electronic health records, automated text messaging, smartphone apps, and other digital interventions to change behavior.

Job Responsibilities

We are seeking a full-time Project Manager A/B will be responsible for managing activities of the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit. The Penn Medicine Nudge Unit is the world's first behavioral design team embedded within a health system. This position will contribute to the Nudge Unit's capacity building efforts and will provide operational and evaluation management to projects conducted within the Nudge Unit. This role requires experience working with multiple stakeholders from various settings, including large health system networks, and human subjects' research experience. In this work, the project manager will be required to act autonomously in their decision-making and display excellent communication skills and good judgment.

Project Manager A Duties: The position is responsible for the project management of multiple Nudge Unit-sponsored projects, including providing oversight of all tasks necessary to ensure that studies are conducted safely and according to protocol. The Project Manager A will be responsible for developing protocols, ensuring proper transfer and management of study data, training and of research coordinators and research assistants. This position will also assist with IRB applications, sponsor reports, and manuscripts in conjunction with an interdisciplinary team of collaborators who work closely with the Nudge Unit.

In addition to the duties described above, the Project Manager B will serve in a leadership role with several clinical and research projects. They will meet regularly with study and department leadership to provide study updates but will function independently in carrying out most responsibilities. The Nudge Unit is actively engaged in collaborative studies with other institutions and with industry partners. The PM B will be expected to be comfortably familiar with internal and external partners and to interact with them appropriately to advance the research goals of the Nudge Unit and collaborative partners. The PM B will be responsible for the training and supervision of research coordinators and research assistants. They will meet regularly with health system leadership to provide Nudge Unit updates but will function independently in carrying out most responsibilities. This position will also assist with grant applications, budget development and management of study finances.

This position is contingent upon funding.

Qualifications

Project Manager A:
  • Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years related experience, demonstrating the ability to complete complex and thoughtful work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Experience in clinical research is preferred.


Project Manager B:
  • Master's degree and 3- 4 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Practical experience designing and coordinating day-to-day project activities required
  • Effective problem-solving abilities and sound judgement required
  • Effective communication and writing skills required
  • Strong organizational and time management skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently required
  • Knowledge of IRB and human research protection regulations preferred
  • Experience with management of multi-site projects preferred
  • Experience with Redcap or other tools for organizing study data preferred
  • Background in health care a plus, whether as a clinician (RN, PT, SW, etc) or in health care management or innovation
  • Experience in application of behavioral science, implementation science, informatics, and/or design thinking a plus
