Purpose of Position

The Senior Cinematographer is responsible for creating compelling marketing videos that support UTEP's educational, research and community service missions. While primarily tasks center include shooting and editing videos, the senior cinematographer is also often responsible for pre-production, principal photography, and post-production task on UTEP's various video productions. The senior cinematographer may work independently or with other members of the UTEP Creative team in the creation of high-impact videos that meet and exceed the quality standards commiserate an R1 research institution that is a key member of Texas' flagship university system.

The Senior Cinematographer will motivate and lead other creatives, contributing to a positive team culture and fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment. Encourage a learning environment within the team, the senior cinematographer will promote continuous growth and development of skills and knowledge.

Essential Functions

  • Capture video and audio footage needed for UTEP's promotional needs using modern digital cameras and audio capture equipment.

  • Edit video footage into powerful, effective videos that convey UTEP's strategic messages.

  • Working with marketing leadership, conceive, script, storyboard, plan and help execute the full production of multiple creative producers.

  • Location scout and talent scout to create the correct aesthetic to convey UTEP's strategic messages.

  • Provide talent direction as needed on shoots.

  • Support the capture of live events on video as needed.

  • Provide technical and creative guidance on the lighting at video shoots.

  • As necessary, art direct the creation of sets and locations for video shoots.

  • Work closely with project managers to ensure that the creative brief and scope of a video project meet the expectations of stakeholders.

  • On occasion, serve as a project manager for complex design video that may involve the work of multiple creative producers.

  • Be familiar with UTEP's Strategic Plan, Strategic Messaging Guide and Visual Brand Guide and ensure that video marketing deliverables are in alignment with these plans.

  • Provide creative critique, suggestions and other constructive input for work created by colleagues in the Marcomm Division

  • Working with the Create Team lead, support the professional collection and cataloging of video assets.

  • On occasion, support the collection of still images for UTEM marketing efforts.

  • Mentor students and junior video creative team members.

    Required Qualifications

    A bachelor's degree in an art, design, media production, marketing communications or related field; or an extensive portfolio demonstrating multiple years of professional, consistently high-quality work.

    Four years of professional experience in video capturing, with a solid portfolio demonstrating knowledge of camera operation, editing, and lighting.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of digital video cameras and SLR cameras

  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Premiere and/or Final Cut Pro and associated applications

  • Ability to articulate UTEP's mission

  • Ability to lead a small production team to complete a video project

  • Advanced ability to operate a professional audio capture device in-studio and in the field.

  • Advanced skills in nonlinear digital editing, incorporating music, voice, B-roll footage, animations, graphics, and other elements to build engaging videos.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
